Sin – Archery Term

RecurveBows

Probably more of a philosophical debate than anything archery but a cool tidbit none the less. I ran across this bit about SIN. No, not the red imp, pointed fork kind but maybe where the term originated from. Who knows?

Here is the bit from Wilipedia…

The word sin derives from Old English synn, recorded in use as early as the 9th century. The same root appears in several other Germanic languages, e.g. Old Norse synd, or German Sünde. There is presumably a Germanic root *sun(d)jō (literally “it is true”).

But in the biblical Hebrew, the generic word for sin is het. It means to err, to miss the mark. It does not mean to do evil.

The Greek word hamartia (ἁμαρτία) is usually translated as sin in the New Testament. In Classical Greek, it means “to miss the mark” or “to miss the target” which was also used in Old English archery. In Koine Greek, which was spoken in the time of the New Testament, however, this translation is not adequate.

So there you go… quit sinning and get into heaven through great archery… That’s the real lesson, isn’t it? :-)

The first initial shots felt really different to me being used to shooting my Martin Savanna Longbow day in and day out. The first thing I noticed was the limb movement. It’s hard to explain but on this Predator recurve all I call say for a lack of a better term, is that I noticed when I shot.
